Ballo, founded this year by Alistair Barnes in Cape Town, has recently launched their first product range called Eyewood – a collection of handmade wooden sunglasses.
After operating as the importer and distributor for Proof Eyewear SA for a couple of years, Alistair ventured to create his own range, which was just launched in June. Ballo spent 6 months developing their first range, paying close attention to quality and craftsmanship, which resulted in a beautiful product that is locally designed and made.
According to Alistair, the name “Ballo” comes from a combination of his last name Barnes and his mother’s maiden name Gallo. Later, as a pretty cool coincidence, he discovered that Ballo happens to mean “dance” in Italian. Alistair provides a fitting description which sums up the brand ethos and product perfectly, saying that he “was focused on producing something fresh, durable, beautiful, sustainable and local.”
Ballo does have plans to branch out into producing clothing, but like all good things, this will take some time. The frames currently available come in four styles – Barnes, Brown, Gallo and Trafton. Each style also comes in 3 different wood options: Imbuia, Walnut or Cherry. All their frames are prescription ready and new styles will be added to the collection in the near future. So far, we like what we see.
