UNAIDS ‘Protect the Goal’ PSA

Fresh Eye Film Productions’ new generation director division, Johnny Gun, paired with UNAIDS and the Show Me Your Number HIV and AIDS prevention project to produce this PSA. The commercial was created to raise public awareness about the dangers of silence surrounding HIV and AIDS by telling the story of Thabang Lebese.

The young and talented soccer star who played for Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs passed away at age 38. His mother spoke out in March this year, a year after his death, to confirm he had passed away from AIDS because he felt he could not speak publicly about his condition and seek treatment through anti-retrovirals.

Using a documentary style, the PSA features Lebese’s mother as the narrator speaking out again, and telling her son’s story. The director, SuPa says, “The idea was to tell an honest, human story. Mrs. Lebese brought truth and emotion that no actor could have brought to this commercial.”

The ad has aired on television, in schools, at soccer stadiums and on digital platforms.
