12 Aug Spoek Mathambo ‘Awufuni’ Music Video
Shot on location in Johannesburg and released on Women’s Day in South Africa, Spoek Mathambo’s music video for his track ‘Awufuni’ pays homage to Izintombi Zesi Manje Manje, the female group that took South Africa by storm in the late 1960s. The song is off Spoek’s acclaimed mix tape ‘Escape to 85.’
The video was directed by Fausto Becatti, produced by Picture Tree and commissioned by VICE who premiered the video on their channel, Noisey. The video was made as part of Studio Africa; an initiative from Diesel+EDUN championing musical artists inspired by their African heritage.
In early 2012, Diesel founder Renzo Rosso and EDUN founders Ali Hewson and Bono joined forces under the name Diesel+EDUN to create a denim collection born in Africa and entirely sourced and manufactured in Africa with the finest CCI cotton from Uganda. Studio Africa was born out of their Spring 2013 collaboration. The initiative goes beyond fashion to discover and be inspired by a cast of creatives fueling innovation across Africa.
Spoek is one of three artists working with Studio Africa this season to co-create a brand new music video for each, all shot on location in Africa and made with the support of Diesel+EDUN.
