The New B&W Photography: Reatile Moalusi

Reatile Moalusi

In the lead up to The New B&W Photography, our film photography exhibition with This Is Film and Orms next Thursday (29th), we’ll be introducing you to the 10 participating photographers one by one. The exhibition will feature photographs all shot in black and white and all shot on film. First up is Reatile Moalusi.

Johannesburg-born Reatile Moalusi is currently studying photography at the Tshwane University of Technology. His photographic art is concerned with revealing more than just the physical form by conveying the soul and character of his subjects. Although his subject matter varies, Reatile finds himself predominantly photographing people, being fascinated by the boundaries between the inner and outer layers of beings.

Reatile’s works are photographed on large format, medium and 35mm film, and post-production is kept to a minimal. He chooses to shoot on film as he believes it doesn’t easily allow manipulations to an extent of distorting the truth he perceives. Much of Reatile’s work aims to bring about increased awareness on social related issue such as discrimination and ill treatment of individuals seen as abnormal.
