Newly Cape Town-based photographer Annemieke Goldswain-Hein hails from The Netherlands where she began her photography career in 2001 after a switch from Graphic Design at HKU art college. A year later she joined her now-husband in the UK where she continued her BA in photography at the University of Brighton. She says, “I realise even more now that that time was so precious; having all the time in the world to be working on personal projects, experiments, to live and breathe photography.”
Annemieke lived and worked in the UK for ten years before making the move to South Africa. After receiving her BA, she continued focussing her photography on Fine Art for a few years, shooting for exhibitions and publications. This work received various awards such as the Guardian Photographer of the Year award, the LPA portraiture award, and the Independent Photographer of the Year award. Following on from her Fine Art photography career she started working on commercial commissions and building a portfolio of portraiture, lifestyle photography, editorial work and creative collaborations.
Alongside working commercially on portrait and editorial commissions, Annemieke works as an educator/facilitator on community based art projects, and has co-founded Blink Photography in Cape Town together with fellow creative photographer, Kristina Stojiljkovic.
Annemieke shoots digital, and post produces minimally. She says, “Photography is part of me, my head is often cooking with ideas for shoots. During my studies, my photography was very much an extension of me, and most images were kind of self-portraits, although I was working on various projects shooting different people. Soon after my studies, my photography style has become more commercially focussed, and I’m enjoying the challenge of combining my style with what a client wants out of an image.
I find inspiration in the light used in old Dutch paintings, and photographers such as Bill Henson, Sarah Moon, Vivianne Sassen, Rineke Dijkstra and Kathy Grannan. I love looking at interesting work of other creatives and really enjoy working with and meeting like minded individuals.”
