Renowned South African photographer, David Goldblatt is this year’s Featured Artist for the FNB Joburg Art Fair. He will be presenting a selection of mostly unseen works, in a series called The Frock and Other Picture: The Structure of Things Then – and After. In these images, Goldblatt explores the ‘structural context’ – the densely complex matrix of cultural, social, political and economic interaction between the maker of a structure and the structure itself.
Goldblatt began photographing places of worship in and around Johannesburg in 1961. He explains: “Gradually I came to see structures and their forms as expressions of value. If it is a truism that all structures are necessarily the outcome of choices made by their makers, and are therefore an expression of their makers’ values, the quality of that expression is as varied as the people who make the choices.”
This video was commissioned by Artlogic, and created by multi-media students at the University of Johannesburg.
