10 Sep Artist profile: Blessing Ngobeni
Blessing Ngobeni is a visual artist working out of the Bag Factory artists studios in Newtown. His work is primarily concerned with the dualities of the relationship city residents have with their environment. In his works, he often incorporates found objects – magazine clippings from art publications and cardboard canvases – that are layered into the works at various depths, often imperceptible to the naked eye. But these play an important conceptual role for Ngobeni, providing commentary on the challenges encountered by young artists as they engage with the world of formal art practice without socio-economic stability and the enabling political environment to support their practice.
Ngobeni debuted at Gallery MOMO in 2012 with a solo show entitled On This Earth. He is also the recipient of the 2012 Reinhold Cassirer Art Award, and was recently chosen by the Mail & Guardian as one of the 200 Top South Africans for 2013. His work will be on show at the FNB Joburg Art Fair at the Gallery MOMO booth.
