Tell us more about yourself and your journey so far.
I am a graphic designer/illustrator based in Cape Town. I have worked in the industry for the past 15 years and have had the chance to work with great clients and with awesome people.
What role did creativity play in your upbringing?
My dad is very creative, he used to paint quite a bit and is a very talented photographer, he was also an avid record collector. My mom is also really creative; she enjoys creating interior spaces and collecting cool things for her home. My siblings are creative, Candice is a copywriter at Gloo, Margot is a fashion designer, Chris is a DJ and Dan is apparently skilled in the kitchen.
What is it that you do you on a day to day basis?
I work as a CD at Aqua Cape Town (Digital) during the day and I illustrate for fun in the evening.
Tell us about your process.
Most of the illustration work I do at the moment is personal work so the process is very fluid and relaxed. I’ll often just think of things I like, or situations I’ve been in and illustrate those.
What’s your ideal environment to work in?
My wife and I usually create while watching TV. I usually illustrate on my laptop and she will cross stitch, it’s our way of relaxing and winding down.
How would you describe your aesthetic or style?
I like to try and strip objects down to their most simple form and work from there. The simpler the better. I like happy accidents where a certain shape of angle works within a set positive or negative space. Freestyle.
What are some of the things that you’re influenced or inspired by?
I like old books, I love old second hand book shops. I like all sorts of illustration and design, I don’t limit myself to one set style. I listen to a lot of music. My wife and kids.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love graphic design, which I get to do during the day at Aqua and I love illustration which I get to do in the evenings (when I feel like it.)
Alternately, what’s the thing you could do without?
Rats in the kitchen and cat videos.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Love your neighbour as yourself.
When you’re not working, what could we expect to find you doing?
Relaxing with my wife and kids.
What are you working on at the moment, and what do you have planned going forward?
I work on multiple jobs during the day at Aqua, so that’s always challenging and ongoing. Illustration wise I don’t really know, I guess I’ll see what catches my fancy.
