22 Oct The Night of 1000Drawings
On Thursday the 7th November, this year’s Night of 1000Drawings will be held at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre.
The Night of a 1000Drawings is a mass art exhibition for charity. It’s been going since 2006, and is all about uplifting the inner-city and the lives of people living there. Their main charity is Paballo, which feeds and supports homeless people living in the inner-city each week. Their second charity is Mmabana, and the third beneficiary this year will be Intuthuko Embroideries.
Once the doors open at 6pm, the artwork will be on view until 8pm. Then, the race to get a sticker on your A5 masterpiece of choice begins and at 9pm the artwork is taken down and collected by its new owners. After this it’s time for the after-party, where four live bands are set to take the stage followed by DJs. A live ‘Doodle Battle’ will also take place, and some of Joburg’s best graffiti artists will be there to battle it out as well. Prizes for artists participating in the battle, and those who have created artwork for the exhibition, have been donated by Converse, Adobe and Red Bull.
Tickets for the Night of 1000Drawings can be purchased at www.webtickets.co.za. Presale tickets cost R22, or R30 at the door. Artwork vouchers are redeemed for stickers on the night, and can be purchased online for R109.
To date, over 1000 pieces of artwork have already been collected and the 1000Drawings team aren’t done yet. You can still attend the last Doodle event before the exhibition, which is happening Sunday 27 October at the Lister Building, 195 Jeppe Street. Alternately, you’re able to drop off your A5 creation at one of the partner coffee shops around town – the rules: draw anything, with anything, on anything A5.
The deadline for submissions is 1 November. See here for a list of venues and drop-off points, or send yours in via post to PO Box 413 554, Craighall, 2024.
On the night, volunteers are needed to man sections of the exhibition spaces, and to sell tickets and artwork stickers. Volunteers will receive a small meal for their time, along with free entry to the exhibition and after-party. If you’re interested in helping out, contact the 1000Drawings office at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call them on 011 781 0439.
