Meet Jody Paulsen: fine artist, graduate, and recent collaborator with Keith Henning on the Adriaan Kuiters SS 13/14 collection. Fresh off the back of his Masters solo exhibition, What You Want Whenever You Want It, a one night affair that was followed by great reviews, Jody shares his work, his student experiences and aspirations with us.
Where and what did you study?
BA fine art (print major) + MA Fine Art Michaelis School of Fine Art
How and why did you become interested in art and fashion?
I always enjoyed making things when I was a child. When I got to art school it became more challenging and interesting. I am naturally interested in fashion. I did a capsule collection for summer with Adriaan Kuiters because we get on well in a working environment. Keith and I spoke about it for ages, so it felt like the right thing to do. The photography featured in my exhibition and the ‘Adriaan Kuiters + Jody Paulsen’ collaboration are all done by Nico Krijno.
What has your experience as a student been like? What valuable lessons did you learn along the way?
Being a student was tough because you are always worrying about money and not being able to work full time. But, I met all my friends at Michaelis.
Tell us about the concept, process and result of your final project at Michaelis.
There were two instructions for my master’s degree: Make a body of creative work and a thesis that showed a researched understanding of content and material.
I started my body of work after making a poster called ‘Manhunt’. I am interested in a combination of things (the surface of luxury goods, the act of shopping, cliches in advertising, collage, dating sites, gay cruising zones, yoga, pop art, celebrity, self-deprecating humour etc). I wanted to make work about things that mattered to me, so I tried to reflect on what was happening around me during the course of making the work. Once I believed that I had made something that worked, I felt more confident to make the next work. I usually watch a lot of television and listen to various podcasts in my studio. It is a useful distraction from all the labour. My thesis was written in a rush but beautifully designed in 2 hours by Ben Johnson.
When it comes to fashion, how would you describe your personal style, and what influences it?
My personal style is pretty close to the collection Keith and I made. A bit oversized, the odd print, easy and practical. I wear sneakers every day because I don’t have a car.
Describe your dream job:
An international ice cream taster.
What are you busy with at the moment?
I’m trying to make more posters while waiting for my results.
What are your plans for the future? (short term and long term)
My goal is to support myself doing something that feels right. Also, I want to be able to go on holidays and never do dishes.
Where can we keep up with what you do?
You can see the collaborative work with Keith Henning at www.adriaankuiters,com. I am still contemplating between a website or tumblr acc for myself.
