Opening in December and running until the end of Feb, adidas AREA3 – the brand’s home for events, exhibitions and pop-up retail in the Maboneng Precinct – hosts Unite Joburg, a portrait photography exhibition.
Five Johannesburg photographers were commissioned to take spontaneous portraits of people they met on the street in five designated Johannesburg suburbs.
The participating photographers – Chris Saunders, Anthony Bila, Hanro Havenga, Stephanie O’Connor and Justice & Innocent Mukheli – were each selected for the project because of their unique styles and involvement in different areas of Johannesburg. Their brief was simply to document the people that make up their given area. Together the photographers and each of their subjects represent a broader perspective of Johannesburg through the different lives and scenes they live by.
The five photographers spent only one day in their areas and were asked to shoot against a white backdrop so as not to create any distractions around the person they were photographing. The idea being to really let each subject’s character, and each photographer’s style be the focus of the image.
Each photographer shot 25 portraits. Here’s a look at some of them. To view the entire collection visit AREA3 at 20 Kruger Street, Johannesburg East, Maboneng Precinct, Thursday – Sunday
12h00 to 16h00 before the end of February.
