Spoek Mathambo’s First Music Collaboration with Tribal Communities

Vodafone Firsts celebrates people doing amazing things for the #First time by bringing together technology and human endeavour. As part of this initiative Vodafone has already partnered with Mary Kom to start a female fight club, and have most recently enabled Neil Harbisson to create a colour-conducted concert.

Vodafone Firsts has also given Spoek Mathambo the opportunity to achieve his own incredible feat, which he did in the form of his first musical collaboration with South African tribes.

“It has been a long-term ambition of mine to work with talented and inspiring musicians to unite South African cultures through music,” says Spoek, who embarked on a journey across South Africa to collect recordings of three distinctly different communities. These samples were sent using Vodafone’s mobile cloud technology to Spoek’s team in Cape Town, who began mixing the track in studio.

The result, which you can listen to below, celebrates the richness of this place we call home.
