Masters of the Universe, the lastest from Cape Town creative studio MUTI, is an illustrated series of portraits based on characters from the iconic 80s animated series of the same name. Awesome, right?

Telling us a bit more about the concept behind series and the process of creating it, MUTI says:

“Everyone loves a bit of nostalgia, including us. Choosing to illustrate the Masters of the Universe came about purely as a fun little experiment. It was great researching them and finding the characters you’d forgotten – or never encountered. I think we’re pretty good at Masters of the Universe trivia now.

We wanted to give MUTI’s own interpretation of the characters, in fact, many of the toy figurines were not always that similar to the TV animations. We had a few heated debates as to which were the best ones to include – everyone has their favourites.

The illustration was a shared project in the studio and we worked in both vector and digital painting. It’s always fun to see where someone else takes a piece you’ve been working on when they introduce their own style. Hopefully the result sparks some childhood memories like a patterned pair of pyjamas you may have owned or a duvet cover some cool kid had.”

Using the collection of portraits MUTI have created a ‘Good Guys’ and ‘Bad Guys’ background for desktop and mobile devices, which are available as a free download here.
