Egg Designs specialises in creating carefully layered interior spaces, as well as bespoke furniture and products. The company was founded by Greg and Roché Dry in 1996, each of whom are interior designers with a great love for all things design and food related.
For 17 years, their focus was mainly on retail design with smaller boutique projects, although now the pair have shifted their focus to decorating and the design of homes. In 2011 Egg Designs opened a flagship retail concept store in Johannesburg, presenting furniture and lifestyle products, followed by another retail space in Durban.
Their work itself is “unashamedly rooted in Africa”, as Greg puts it. Each individual item is well-crafted, eclectic, and can easily find a home anywhere in the world. As to what they’re inspired by, Greg says that “as clichés go, everything is inspiring. From old classical furniture through to factories and found material.”
When it comes to function and form, neither is more important to Greg and Roché than the other. “There are times that as a designer,” Greg tells us, “problems are encountered which the pendulum of design can swing in favour of one or the other. This said, we still believe that something has to look good and catch the attention of the passer-by, which is why we refer to our work as emotional. Work that evokes a response.”
On process, Greg explains that often a product can be the result of a flash of an idea, or it can take quite a long time to develop. “The basic process is to make sketches of the kind of category we want to design in, often working through a design fight between the two of us, and then we work on narrowing it down. After this, a computer model of the design is rendered, which leads to a prototype and eventually the actual production.”
At the moment Greg and Roché are working on extending their range of Liz Chandeliers, as well as creating a range that is very tribal in its influences. Since the early days of Egg Designs, they have worked hard growing in different areas – with great success – and now their goal is to expand their global reach. Whatever the future may hold for Egg Designs, they’re clear on the fact that they will continue exploring.
