Openings This Week: CT | Three Solo Exhibitions, A Design Dialogue and Doodle on the Mountain

This week there are three solo exhibitions, a group show, design dialogues and a doodling session on top of Table Mountain. Here are all the details.

Thursday, 10 April

Such, Such Were the Joys by Anton Kannemeyer opens at Stevenson

On the Nelson Mandela Bridge

As South Africa moves into its 20th year of democracy, Kannemeyer continues to explode the idea of the ‘rainbow nation’ through the incisive satire with which he first eviscerated apartheid’s officials and bureaucrats.

Exhibition opens 6pm – 8pm at 160 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock.

Kannemeyer will give a walkabout of his exhibition in support of the Friends of the National Gallery on Friday 11 April at 11am. Cost is R20.

Exhibition runs 10 April – 24 May 2014.

Sightings of the Sacred: Cattle in India, Uganda and Madagascar by Daniel Naude opens at Stevenson

Group of Ankole cattle. Kiruhura district, Western Region, Ugand

For the past two years Naudé has focused on photographing cattle in societies where these animals are revered and venerated. This is a position far removed from the Western world where they are mostly seen as productive sources of milk, meat and skins.

Exhibition opens 6pm – 8pm at 160 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock.

Exhibition runs 10 April – 24 May 2014.

Finding (and keeping) your creative edge — How everyday experiences can inspire extraordinary design. Ideas are everywhere. So why are some people better than others at converting inspiration into action? Do they see the world differently? And is it possible to “rediscover the ordinary” by looking at things through fresh eyes?

The German Club, Roodehek Terrace, Hope Street, Gardens at 6pm.

Remember to RSVP here.

The exhibition comprises works created between 2008 and 2013, as well as a very early work from 1986. The keen selection brings viewers up to date with the artist’s production, as well as reiterating her mastery of the medium that has long served her unrelenting critical interrogation of everyday atrocities and the abuse of power.

The exhibition runs from 12 April – 29 June 2014 at Montebello Design Centre, 31 Newlands Avenue, Cape Town.

Golden Age Rising, a new exhibition of sculptures by Daniella Mooney opens at WHATIFTHEWORLD

Daniella Mooney

In this exhibition Mooney is concerned with an exploration of the notion or experience of the numinous as a gestalt phenomenon. A numinous experience is an experience in which one feels to be in communion with a wholly other – an experience defined by both tremendum, the tendency to invoke fear and trembling, and fascinans, the tendency to attract, fascinate and compel.

Opening at 1 Argyle Street, Woodstock, Cape Town at 11am.

This is an excuse to block out time in your busy calendar purely for writing. You can write about anything you like: A chapter of your book, that letter to your grandparent, the business proposal, diary, code, poetry, creative stuff.  A write-up is about realising that you can write whenever you like, you don’t have to wait for creative inspiration. Exercise your creativity by dedicating time to writing.

Woodstock Exchange, Block B, Third Floor at 6pm.
