11 Apr Fantasma Shot by Kent Andreasen
For 2014, producer/singer/rapper Spoek Mathambo presents Fantasma a new ‘superband’ whose members have been recruited from across South Africa. The diverse group of four is made up by electronica producer DJ Spoko from Pretoria, traditional Zulu instrumentalist Bhekisenzo Cele from Durban, psychedelic rock guitarist Andre Geldenhuys from Cape Town, and fronted by Afro-futurist artist Spoek Mathambo representing Johannesburg.
Fantasma played their first two shows on the 28th and 30th of March in Johannesburg and Pretoria respectively. Next up for the band is an international gig at Sónar 2014 in Barcelona, who say, “The edgy, unorthodox figure of Spoek Mathambo heads the Fantasma project, a South African superband made up of musicians with very different backgrounds and styles who teamed up to create a sound that is far more than the sum of its parts…Into this melting pot go dozens of styles, skills, sounds and influences, from deep house (one of the most popular genres in the country) to psychedelia by way of Zulu traditions, hip hop psych rock, ancestral beats, Bacardi house (invented by DJ Spoko) and even aspects of surf music, one of Geldenhuys’ areas of expertise.”
Fantasma’s debut EP, Eye of The Sun, drops this month (April 2014). Taking cues from this title, photographer/cinematographer Kent Andreasen took these photographs to introduce the band. The shoot follows a previous collaboration between Kent, together with Johno Mellish, and Spoek for his music video/fashion film with Floyd Avenue, Zombie.
