Out of Office: Croft & Co

Set in the characterful Tyrone Avenue in Parkview – the same stretch of road in which you’ll find a secondhand book shop and the local grocery store – is Croft & Co.

The establishment that is now a coffee shop and eatery was originally founded by Grant Ravenscroft as a luxury men’s gift store, which even then had a reputation as a place to procure an excellent cup of coffee. Evidently, this much has not changed as Croft & Co is still serving up a fine selection of Lavazza coffees daily and has become a regular go-to spot for the locals.

With extensive experience in the food industry (he owns the restaurant Scusi next door, among others) Grant’s simple menu has been created with only quality ingredients in mind. Meanwhile Anne Rich, Grant’s sister and Croft & Co chef, sees to it that everything served is well prepared and presented.

Popular breakfast options at Croft & Co include their signature scrambled eggs served Lincolnshire sausages, bacon or salmon, or a nourishing portion of muesli with your choice of fruit or yogurt. Come lunchtime, a classic Caesar salad or the Salsiccia meatballs, which are served on a Portuguese roll in a tomato sauce, are favourites.

Earthy accents of brick and wood contribute to the decor, which is lifted by the more graphic elements such as the line-based artworks and window applications. Pops of green add a nice vibrancy to the generally relaxed atmosphere and although the space that Croft & Co occupies is relatively small, the set-up ensure that is doesn’t feel too crowded even when it is full (as is often the case.) The aforementioned, paired with the free WiFi, make for the ideal setting get a good days work done out of the office – and chances are you won’t be the only one doing so.

Croft & Co is situated at 66 Tyrone Avenue, Parkview, Johannesburg.
