25 Jun 10 Inspiration Tumblrs by South African Creatives
While the question “what are you inspired by?” is one that is commonly asked of creatives, it’s also one of the most difficult to answer. Most will agree that when it comes to inspirations, style or aesthetics – images say it best. In the light of that we dug deep into the vortex of tumblr to find out where some of our favourite South African creatives collect their inspirations. In each case we’ve also paired the tumblrs with examples of the creatives’ own work to see the correlations, and differences, between the two. Enjoy the visual feast!
Sebastian Borckenhagen is a Cape Town based artist, illustrater and writer who has recently spent some time in our InAWE Residency programme. Often inspired by the shapes and patterns of traditional African art, Sebastian’s charming work (like this animated video for the song ‘Muizenberg’ by John Wizards) is executed with a playful and modern approach. His tumblr is the perfect shocase of his eclectic and colourful influences.
There’s no denying the fact that photographer Caroline Mackintosh works incredibly hard – having been signed to Supernova and having shot for the likes of Oyster and VICE US all during the past year. Even then, she makes it looks like the most fun imaginable and her photographs, projecting the same spirit that she herself embodies, are young, carefree and adventurous. A peek into her inspirations on tumblr reflects just the same.
Rouleaux van der Merwe
Rouleaux van der Merwe is a multimedia designer who contributes his skills to the Cow Africa team by day, while on the sideline brings his excellent way with colour and fonts to freelance projects and band posters. Inspired by Bitterkommix, Hergé, Sagmeister, ijusi, deluxe coffee, beer and jazz cigarettes – a few of which you’ll find on his tumblr – Rouleaux’s graphic design and illustration work is bold and incredibly eye-catching.
Daniella Mooney is an artist currently working from a shared studio in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town. Her second solo exhibition, Golden Age Rising, showed at Whatiftheworld Gallery earlier this year and consisted of seven sculptures dealing with aspects of ritual, performance, celebration and an attempt to commune with and find the sacred within everyday life. While containing some of her own work, Daniella’s tumblr is a visual archive of rare natural materials, installations and historical curiocities.
Gabrielle Kannemeyer is an art student turned vintage clothing entrepreneur turned stylist-to-watch. Oficially, she works as a menswear stylist at online designer fashion store Spree, while lending her impeccable taste and vision to images made in collaboration with some of Cape Town’s most exciting photographers in her spare time. Her recent work includes a short film for Bateleur as well as styling the first official images for Spoek Mathambo’s superband Fantasma. Her tumblr is made up with a mixture of dreamy and bold imagery – two elements which seem to coexist so well in her work.
Sam Wells is a young creative specialising in print and web design, branding and illustration. He’s incredibly passionate about art and the ever growing creative community in Cape Town and endevours to absorb all of life’s experiences, allowing these to influence his design. As a glimpse of some of the things that catch his eye, Sam’s tumblr is an ever growing collection breezy images in pastel colours.
Jess Sara Wright
Born and raised in Cape Town, Jess Sara Wright is a photographer who also wears the hat of graphic designer (and nocturnal internet grazer). While her images may be simple as a result of her natural approach, her work is intruiging and she’s most drawn to photographing landscapes, people and her surroundings. Jess’ tumblr, just as lovely as her own work, is a mix of muted and offbeat images.
Katherine-Mary Pichulik is the founder, designer and maker behind Pichulik – a bold accessories line for even bolder women. In conceptualising the pieces Katherine is predominantly inspired by her travels, artist friends, fellow wonderful women, and the gutsy and down-right courageous stuff in each of us. All Pichulik pieces (the most recent of which are in the 2014 Autumn Winter Collection) are hand-made from rope and collected materials. Her tumblr is filled with exotic colours and textures, making for an all-round treat for the eyes.
Bee Diamondhead is the ever-fabulous, say it like it is, junior fashion editor at Marie Claire SA. Together, her bold eye and fresh approach make for fashion magic and, if you’ve ever witnessed her in action it’s clear that making pictures makes Bee happy. On her tumblr you’ll find fashion-related inspiration, gifs galore and plenty of things to have a laugh about, too – an absolute reflection of Bee’s vibrant personality.
Thomas Pepler is a graphic designer living in Cape Town, where he creates identities and builds brands for local businesses at Monday Design. He also takes film photographs of the people and things he sees daily, focusing on symmetry and simplistic graphic elements and associating his work with the overarching themes of nostalgia, wonder and bliss. In all it’s sun-drentched and relaxed appeal, Thomas’ tumblr is the perfect accompaniment to his work.
