The Others are a creative collective comprised of three unlike-minded creators: Anthony Bila, Stacey Van Der Walt and Chisanga Mubanga. Inspired by an old adage “if you want to go quickly, go alone, if you want to go far, go together,” The Others were born out of Anthony’s belief that collaboration yields far more interesting results than exploring or expressing a concept one dimensionally.
The individuals making up The Others have varying backgrounds, which created the perfect climate for the collaboration to thrive. Stacey is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in fine art, graphic design and photography. Chisanga on the other hand is also a photographer as well as a trend analyst/forecaster, while Anthony himself has experience in photography, fine art, videography, music production and writing.
Recently the trio created a series of images, Noir! Noir! Noir!, inspired by the visual style of Film Noir with roots in German Expressionism. “I wanted to reinterpret it slightly though to make it our own, African,” says Anthony. The series is a showcase of their individual photographic styles, which were equally balanced in post-production. In terms of direction Anthony believes “in having a framework, concept or direction but simultaneously leaving room for individual self-expression and spontaneity while shooting.” Anthony also wanted to “reference other imagery so that each photo told an individual narrative whilst still making sense within the series.”
Noir! Noir! Noir! is the first in what will be an ongoing series of dissimilar collaborations between the 3 creators. About where The Others are headed, Anthony says that: “the projects and concepts will only continue to grow, and challenge us and the audiences we’re privileged to reach, to become more and more subversive, and we’ll expand from just photography to incorporate film, music, writing and other disciplines.” Extending their focus on making collaborative work, The Others are opening up for other multi-disciplined creatives to join them on their journey of challenging the status quo.
