For this week’s List Wednesday we’re showcasing a selection of some of South Africa’s hottest chop artists who work across a range of styles and techniques.
Die Honest is the alias of Phillip Botha, a Johannesburg-based artist who specialises in custom electric tattoos in the old school traditional Americana tradition. He co-heads up Sinking Ink Tattoos. Follow him on Instagram for regular updates on new work.
Ninjabreadboy is a Cape Town based artist and hand-poke tattooist. His style is loose and playful and in keeping with his humorous designs.
Sean Perrins and Bea Lea both work out of the Johannesburg studio, The Black Lodge. The shop takes its name from the mythical spirit place in the Twin Peaks TV series. “The Black Lodge is not so much a construct, but rather a space between worlds. An empty page, waiting to be written”. Both artists’ do beautiful soft colour work, Bea’s watercolour-esque.

Irish James and Kaptain Cade both work at Sins of Style in Cape Town. James is a highly acclaimed hand-poke tattooer, and focuses on old-time, solid, bright, bold Western Traditional electro-magnetic tattoos. Cade has a background in graffiti and graphic design. He is passionate about script and specialises in Western Traditional and Neo-traditional tattoo styles.
Ting of Ting’s Tattooing and Piercing specialises in all styles of tattooing. His style is characterised by fine lines and bold colours, and some quirky designs.
