08 Aug The First Edition of Art Week Joburg
This August the first edition of Art Week Joburg kicks off as galleries, museums, arts organisations and artists will collaborate to create a platform for local art to shine.
The initiative is modelled after Art Week Cape Town (which has run successfully for two years) and as a whole, aims to increase the visibility of and heighten the focus on the visual arts industry in cities throughout South Africa.
Art Week Joburg is a collaborative partnership between The Contemporary Art Development Trust (CADT), Visual Arts Network South Africa (VANSA) and ARTLOGIC. It seeks to create a more robust community of art producers, consumers and appreciators by acting as a market platform, an information hub as well as a leisure attraction for locals and visitors.
Open to everyone, Art Week Joburg runs during the same week of the 2014 FNB Joburg Art Fair from 19 – 24 August.
The 5 day programme makes its way across the creative hubs of Soweto, the Rosebank Art Strip, the Maboneng Precinct, Braamfontein, Newtown and Alexandra. Shuttle services are available to all precincts, and will also operate within each precinct. A few of over 40 participants are the Maboneng Township Arts Experience, David Krut Projects, Museum of African Design, The Market Photo Workshop and the Wits Art Museum – see a full schedule of Joburg Art Week here.
