Arid | A Short Fashion Film by Tao Farren-Hefer & Kent Andreasen

Earlier this year filmmaker/photographers Kent Andreasen and Tao-Farren Hefer, stylist Gabrielle Kannemeyer, hair and make-up artist Emma Launder and model Giannina Antonette headed out of the city to shoot stills for the very first edition of Pylot magazine, a new UK-based publication that features only analogue photography with zero-beauty retouching. They decided to go the extra mile by making a short fashion film to add another dimension to the project. So, while Kent shot stills, Tao filmed the arid surrounds, the little bits of life it offered up, and Giannina in motion bringing the frozen moments in Kent’s images to life. The resulting film is a beautiful collection of subtle gestures, visual tricks and is, in a way, a unique behind the scenes glimpse of the original shoot. Tao says, “For the duration of the shoot we went up to Quagga’s Kloof dam near Worcester, Kent and I directing the model in between stills. We pretty much just had fun with it and ran with any ideas that came about on the set, created by the relationship of the styling and landscape, as well as the emotions of the character this relationship moulded.”

The superbly talented Gabbi Kannemeyer styled the shoot using all local fashion. She explained her thinking behind the visuals, “It’s important for me to use clothing made by South African designers – I enjoy reinterpreting our local designers’ work and seeing it depicted in different landscapes. Each piece used was proudly South African. I wanted to depict the versatility in design amongst our designers but in a way that the story would still be cohesive. The landscape we shot in provided the perfect setting – the locations all sat quite near one another and yet contrasted each other remarkably. From dry desolate red patches of earth with swirling pools of water, to white sandy hills littered with massive ivory rocks and giant ants – the terrain varied yet maintained a feeling of cohesion through its strangeness.”
