TEDxJohannesburg is back and takes place this week on Thursday 21st August 2014 at The Forum in Bryanston. This year’s programme pays homage to South Africa’s twenty years of democracy, which finds us still grappling with more questions than we have answers.

The theme for this year is We The People, which event convenor Kelo Kubu says “features a curated selection of the most remarkable men and women putting in the time, effort and imagination necessary to create a better life for themselves and for future generations”.

The speaker lineup comprises a variety of individuals from the full spectrum of disciplines — the humanities, the sciences and the arts. They will present 3-18 minute talks on ideas about the future, the world, the continent of Africa, the city of Johannesburg, and of the people who call these places home.

Speakers include African futures thinker Jakkie Cilliers, molecular biophysicist Musa Mhlanga, politician-cum-diplomat Tony Leon and the street-side book reviewer popularly known as the ‘pavement bookworm’, Philani Dladla. ‘Futures of Technology in Africa’ author Jasper Grosskurth, fashion industry icon Marianne Fassler, 3D printing sculpurist Michaella Janse van Vuuren, and the man soon to be the first black African in space Mandla Maseko, will also speak at the event. Popular Johannesburg band Zuko Collective close with their typically stirring, eclectic act of rock influenced lead guitars, passionate percussions and husky vocals.
