Department of Coffee

Levi’s Pioneer Nation feat. Department of Coffee

Next up in a series of films leading up to Levi’s Pioneer Nation is Department of Coffee.

Started by Wongama Baleni, Vusumzi Mamile and Vuyile Msaku, Department of Coffee is known as Khayelitsha’s first coffee shop, launched in 2012 on the corner of Ntlazane Road and Khwezi Crescent in Llitha Park. “Coffee for the people, by the people”, DOC uses their own brand of locally roasted Arabica-Italian coffee beans. Patrons are able to order a variety of espresso-based options: latte, cappuccino, macchiatos, chococcino and freezeeccinos, none of which cost more than R10.

The trio came up with the idea two years before launching, while attending a life skills programme. Wongama says, “Since we were young we told ourselves that we must own our own business. We started up a coffee shop to make a living and now we’re inspiring those around us and creating jobs for other young people. We want to see change. We want to continue to build our business and create more jobs for the youth. If we can open up more shops we can lift the economy in the township.”

Levi’s Pioneer Nation is a festival taking place in Braamfontein, Johannesburg on the 25th of September. The interactive daytime programme will bring together 40 Pioneers who will share their stories in 15-minute presentations. Each speaker has been selected because of their proven ability to identify a gap in the market and align their passion. PioneerNation.biz will become a hub for sharing the stories of hundreds of inspiring local and international Pioneers and is designed to be a pragmatic resource for the young and eager looking to connect the dots from insight to idea to income.
