Umuzi Photo Club #P50 Students for the Levi’s Pioneer Nation Festival

We’ve been working alongside the Umuzi Photo Club and their Power of 50 (#P50) students on a very special project in the run up to the Levi’s Pioneer Nation Festival. In the spirit of the festival, which is all about equipping young entrepreneurs, we’ve made an opportunity for six #P50 students to work on a series of interviews with some of the festival’s speakers and organisers.

Celebrating the brave spirits who recognise opportunities, take chances and face their challenges head on, Pioneer Nation is a unique 16 hour festival in the heart of Johannesburg’s Braamfontein district. More than a festival, Pioneer Nation is a vehicle that aims to inspire, inform and entertain. On 25 September an interactive daytime programme will bring together 40 modern Pioneers to candidly share their backstories, entrepreneurial insights and practical wisdom in 15-minute presentations.

For the past two weeks Keneilwe Motshoeneng, Matthew Mundell, Farzanah Caster, Xolani Phakathi, Obakeng Molepe and Simangele Shabalala have been attending (and will still attend) workshops and one-on-one sessions hosted by Umuzi Photo Club and 10and5 which focus on writing and editing skills, photography and digital publishing. The students are working either individually or together to interview filmmaker Lebo Rasethaba, organizer of Collective market Catherine Ohlson de Fine, Khaya Sibiya of Punk & Ivy, director at The Bread Anthea Poulos, founder of Retroviral Mike Sharman, as well as our very own Uno de Waal.

Their interviews will be published here on in the week leading up to the Pioneer Nation Festival, and we’re very excited to see the results!
