Henriette Botha‘s statement jewellery pieces are handcrafted and locally manufactured in Johannesburg using colourful and unconventional materials for a fresh and contemporary African style. However, it was a big, exciting city on another continent altogether that inspired her Spring Summer 2015 collection, ‘Summer in the City’. She says, “It began with a visit to New York earlier this year, just as spring was turning into summer. There was an indescribable energy in the city. Everyone was outdoors, on rooftops, in parks, at sidewalk cafes. Ice-cream shops and trucks were in abundance. The energy was palpable.”
The resulting pieces are a slight departure from previous ranges using much more colour than before; pastels are emboldened by bursts of vibrant brights and metallics. In addition to the typical elements executed by Henriette’s team of Ndebele craftswomen, she has most notably added brass and the collection includes simple brass cuffs that offset the bright hues of the crocheted colourful thread. Leather cords and tassles have also been introduced to the playful collection in limited edition necklaces. Other pieces incorporate glass beads in the shape of bananas, strawberries and oranges adding a festive, Carmen Miranda-like character to the range.
