MTN 8 ‘Glory Favours the Brave’ TVC

 

MTN 8  is an anticipated  football tournament in South Africa where teams play for R8million. The event’s slogan is “Wafa wafa!” which means ‘do or die’ in Zulu. MetropolitanRepublic explains that this inspired their insight that “there are 2 types of footballers; those who do, and those who die.”

 

The video opens with the disclaimer: “This advertisement was shot with professionals in a controlled environment. Do not attempt”. This sets the tone for a simple but powerful TV commercial that shows a group of soccer players playing with a ball that has been set alight – “that’s as simple and iconic as you can get,” says director Daniel Levi in the Behind the Scenes YouTube video. The fired-up ball, shot in dramatic slow motion, captures a sense of exhilaration and danger and this exciting effect was achieved without CGI or special effects. The impressive shots focus on flames, fire and fearless play, reinforcing MTN 8’s campaign message: ‘Glory Favours the Brave’.
