18 Nov Stepping Inside THE BOX with ANDREA•GWYNN
THE BOX is a portrait and interview series by ANDREA•GWYNN, bringing us up close and personal with 12 dynamic individuals in the realms of music, art, performance, fashion, photography and other creative fields. A new instalment is released every fortnight and, after launching in October with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, THE BOX has profiled Chu Suwannapha followed by Nicci Saint Bruce and Matt Hichens.
Watching the videos feels a bit like having a conversation with a close friend – the result of a candid approach chosen by the duo, who through the series aim to challenge expectations and shift the paradigm of social status. With the fourth instalment (which happens to hit a little closer to home for us) officially released today, we caught up with Chloe and Darren to find out why they’re directing their gaze inside THE BOX.
How did the idea for THE BOX originally come about?
We have always wanted to shoot a portrait series. The point was to try shed all stereotypes, especially in a city which has such a strong reputation of cynicism.
Tell us a bit about the people you’ve featured, and why you selected them…
So far we have featured Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, Chu Suwannapha, Nicci Saint Bruce with Matt Hichens and Uno de Waal. The people we have selected all come from vastly different backgrounds from acting to fashion to music. A little selfishly, we admit that the people we have chosen for THE BOX have had an influence on us and certainly an influence on their respective fields.
How do you maintain a candid, relaxed feel to the interviews? Is this in any way a deliberate departure from your commercial work, which tends to be more refined?
Roland Barthes, in his book Camera Lucida talks about The Pose. His basic theory around this is that a human’s natural instinct is to pose when a camera is pointed at them and so the way we shoot THE BOX is derived from this way of thinking. If one is shooting, the other is talking to the subject allowing their pose to crack and their attention to veer away from the camera which in turn, allows us to shoot a portrait of the person behind the wall/pose.
What goes into producing an instalment of THE BOX?
Time, of course and the strong crew we have carefully put together. We are lucky to have Photohire sponsoring us and a crew that are as meticulous as we are.
Can you give us any clues as to who you’re featuring next?
The next BOX candidate is an up and coming actress who recently has had the opportunity of brushing shoulders with Colin Firth. Seeing as Chloe is an avid Bridget Jones fan girl, we were a little biased in our wanting the interview, not to mention that she is beautiful to shoot. We kind of refer to her as an alien as she is not of this earth, she is far superior. Simmer down boys, simmer down.
What else are you working on at the moment?
We’re sure you’ll be talking about it in the next 3 weeks when we launch.
