Show & Tell: Video Edition | An Evening of Talks Hosted by 10and5

Next Thursday, 11 December, you can look forward to another Between 10and5 Show & Tell. For this installment we’re keeping to a video and film theme.

The following three guest speakers will be sharing their inspiration, process and some unseen footage:

Jolynn Minnaar (Un_Earthed)

Karoo born director, Jolynn Minnaar, is the voice and vision behind Unearthed, a raw feature documentary in which she investigates the environmental impact of fracking in the Karoo. Jolynn travelled to the United States (where fracking originated), Canada and the United Kingdom to try and understand what this new method of gas extraction could mean for the semi-arid Karoo, and she’s quite sceptical. Un_Earthed is the result of 18 months of research, over 400 interviews and a nauseating combination of gag orders, no trespassing zones and suffering first hand chemical exposure from drilling sites.

Julia Anastasopoulos (Suzelle DIY)

Suzelle DIY is a hilarious bitesize Do-It-Yourself web series created by filmmaker and animator Ari Kruger and Julia Anastasopoulos, aka Knolc. In each video Suzelle, the very Afrikaans and ultra domesticated version of Julia, demonstrates a neater, more efficient and more elegant way of getting everyday chores around the house done. Besides acting out her alter-ego, Suzelle, Julia is an established illustrator, artist and designer. Her move from artist to YouTube channel success story is unusual and intriguing. Suzelle DIY is beautifully styled and shot and (if we must admit) it’s pretty useful too!

Kurt Orderson (Not In My Neighbourhood)

Kurt Orderson is a film director and producer whose heart lies in telling honest stories. In his up-coming film, “Not in My Neighbourhood”, he pursues the topics of spatial violence, post-Apartheid planning and current-day gentrification, comparing Cape Town and Johannesburg to New York through a series of interviews. “I make films to heal the people,” he says, with an aim to always tell both sides to a story.
