Boolz ‘Aphe Kapa’ Music Video

Boolz’s song titled ‘Aphe Kapa’ (translates ‘Here in Cape Town’) celebrates exciting things that young Capetonians are creating and keeping busy with. The video directed by Batandwa Alperstein shows off exactly that. Taking its pace from the bilingual song spanning the genres of hip hop, rap, electro and experimental, the music video is a fresh mix of ‘traditional’, boastful hip hop music video and a uniquely South African tone. Shot in Langa where Boolz’s grew up ,the video features his childhood friends making up a large part of the cast and crew, whole sheep heads, custom bicycles and local style crews. “Langa has never had a hip hop music video shot there and there’s so much to be celebrated,” says Batandwa. He explains that with this song and the new music video, they wanted to show that “Aphe Kapa (‘Here in Cape Town’) the youth are flexing as hard as other parts of the country.”

A line of Boolz’s lyrics translates “your girl looks good on me,” which inspired Batandwa to invite Jana ‘Babez’ Terblanché to make a guest appearance. “I love her work and how she explores the complex ideas that surround the female figure,” he explains. Her unmissable pink lycra bodysuit formed part of a performance piece she did a while ago, which Batandwa chose to include as a “fitting commentary on the hip hop video vixen idea”. Showcasing a great variety of local creativity, the video also features graffiti work by Skhumablisto and custom bicycles by Zahier Davids of Flywheel Custom Chariots, who taught himself how to make low-rider bikes by hand in his garage. Speaking about the underlying message behind the video, Batandwa says that there are “thought-starters” sprinkled throughout the video, but he’d prefer if people came to their own conclusions. He says that, “at the end of the day it’s a music video and it hopes to communicate that Boolz is the shit and Cape Town is the shit and we’re having fun doing what we want and love here. Aphe Kapa Sizpholele, Aphe Kapa Sizmamele!”
