04 Dec #NowPlaying: Exclusive Mixtapes for Sónar Cape Town 2014
Sónar, the international festival of advanced music and new media art, will soon be held at Cape Town’s iconic Good Hope Centre from 15 – 16 December. The Mother City forms a fitting choice for the festival, as it continues to emerge as a key destination for the electronic music scene. Sónar Cape Town will play host to leading international artists alongside top local DJs and producers with a lineup including Spoek Mathambo’s ‘superband’ Fantasma, writer/composer Markus Wormstorm, Sibot aka Simon Ringrose and Mr. Sakitumi & the Grrrl.
In the lead up to the event, a few exclusive mixtapes have been released as a taste of what to expect, and we’re excited to share them for #NowPlaying today. Below you’ll find a mix by Fever Trails, Das Kapital and Christian Tiger School – each with unreleased tracks and works in progress. Enjoy!
Nicolaas van Reenen is a Cape Town based multi- instrumentalist and producer, known for his work with a number of acclaimed and emerging acts. He’s filled in guest roles for Spoek Mathambo, creates sonic textures with Bateleur, and most recently produces avant electro acoustic sounds as Fever Trails. Eclectic and ethereal, Fever Trails combines Ableton Live, synthesisers, guitars, drums, piano and bass with Nicolaas’ signature complex, layered sound.
23 year old Das Kapital is one of the foremost DJs and producers in South Africa. As the co-owner of Do Work Records, he is known for playing all sides of bass Music, from house, trap, D&B, Grime, to techno and beyond – anything goes as long as it brings energy to the dancefloor. Driven by drums, he has also been at the forefront of the nu acid sound, drawing on classic hardcore, jungle and acid house influences and bringing them squarely into the now, best showcased by his own single Do Azid.
Christian Tiger School:
Christian Tiger School (Luc Veermeer and Sebastiano Zanasi) are electronic producers from Cape Town. Coming together for a love of electronic music and hip-hop, the pair found themselves experimenting in production early in 2011 which led to their debut album, Third Floor. Their sophomore release, Chrome Tapes, came out this year and takes a new direction – while the hip-hop foundation remains, house and techno have been integrated moving them into the more experimental electronica field.
