Ads This Week: United States of Africa, Walking Dead and The End of Ugly


In Ads This Week we’ve got an award-winning promo for Channel O by Black River FC, a prank played on the South African public to create awareness for the Ronald McDonald House Charities,’s End of Ugly Christmas campaign and some really funny moments in another award-winning promo for Walking Dead on FOX TV.



The United States of Africa | The Channel O Music Video Awards Promo by Black River FC




Channel O and Black River FC won five gold awards at the recent PromaxBDA Africa 2014 for the Best Television Image Promo, Best Special Event Promo, The MAMA Africa Award, Best Copy/Script Writing and Best Directing. The work also received silver for Best Original Logo Design and Sound Design.


The one-minute promo instills a sense of pride among Africans at large and positions Channel O as an authority on African Youth Culture. It includes a monologue inspiring youth to take pride in their African heritage and to view the continent differently, which takes place on a background of Afro-centric art projected onto a hovering sphere. The script was written and performed by Nhlanhla Ngcobo of Big FKN Gun.



Ronald McDonald House Charities – Awareness Prank




Ronald McDonald House of Charities is Mac Donalds Global CSI project. It is very well recognised and received in USA but in SA the awareness and the education of it, is very much in need. Off Limit Communication was tasked to achieve this and this is the live activation that they put together. It has been a huge success as they have truly captured the SA audience by our renown culture of curiosity, intrigue and extreme nature to always help.


Superbalist’s ‘End of Ugly’ Christmas Campaign







Christmas is the time for giving; it’s also the time for receiving ‘unwanted’ gifts. created a platform to help rid the world of bad design, one terrible gift at a time by launching a Christmas campaign – The End of Ugly. The campaign launched with a series of videos featuring Poppy from 5fm; Joao from Micasa; Innocent from ‘I See a Different You’; Carlinn from Superficial Girl and Masego ‘Maps’ Maponyane putting an end to ‘Ugly’, destroying their worst gifts in various fun ways. To receive a discount, consumers are encouraged to create a video of their own by calling out the person who gave them the ‘unwanted’ gift. Both sender and receiver will receive a 30% discount as well as an opportunity to win their own wish list worth R20, 000. To increase their chances, consumers can create and upload a video of themselves with the dreadful gift they’ve received, naming the person who gave it to them, and then safely destroying it.
