Johannesburg-based millinery brand Simon and Mary just revealed the story behind their Traditional Mountie Hat in a video that’s something of a hybrid between a factory tour and a rock-n-roll music video. It shows the journey of the Traditional Mountie Hat as it travels through the skilled hands of generations of milliners, showing each step of the process – all to the soundtrack of Black Wolf by Joburg’s own rock band, Hellcats.
Spanning two continents, seventy years and four generations, Simon and Mary is a brand that’s passionate about the traditional method of making hats. This family affair was first established in 1935 when Mordechai Pozniak (Simon’s father) brought his cap factory from Poland to Johannesburg. Dean Pozniak (Mordechai’s great grandson) re-launched the business in 2014, promising to stick to the tradition upon which the company was founded in the 1930s. Today they’re still located in the same factory and using machinery bought in the 1960s. If that’s not awe-inspiring enough, this video will definitely instil a deep respect for their craft. Good luck not tapping along!
