Riky Rick ‘Boss Zonke’ Music Video Shot Across JHB, CT and Durban

Johannesburg-based rapper/producer Riky Rick released his track ‘Boss Zonke’ in October 2014, just in time for summer in South Africa. Download it here! The music video for the hit dropped on Friday night on Channel O‘s TurnUp with Scoop Makhathini and enjoyed thousands of views over the weekend. A We-Are-Awesome Film production, the video was directed by Adriaan Louw and features the Boyznbucks crew in their neighbourhoods across the country in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Riky Rick and Adriaan collaborated previously on the video for ‘Nafukwa’ mid-last year.

Adriaan let us know about how the ‘Boss Zonke’ video came about, “Riky wanted to feature a bunch of different groups of friends and family from around the country so that’s exactly what we did. Myself, Riky, producer Imran Hamdulay and DOP Deon van Zyl flew around the country over a weekend to shoot in Durban, Umlazi, Joburg, Soweto and Cape Town…Without Imran Hamdulay’s producing skills and Deon Van Zyl’s fancy camera work this could not have happened. It’s always rad working with a team that you could see yourself working with forever. This is that team for me.”

The team decided on a documentary approach which meant once they understood what they wanted, they had to actively go out and search for it every time they arrived in a new city. While a lot of planning went into the making of the video, Adriaan credits being in the right places at the right time for adding the magic. He says, “I enjoy doing it in this style from time to time as it’s always fun shooting with a spontaneous element.”
