13 Apr #MakeItHappen | Unathi Mkonto
In line with Lumia’s #MakeItHappen campaign we’re hitting the streets with Lumia devices to capture what goes into sourcing for a shoot, prepping for a big event or setting up a solo art show in ‘making of’ photographs. First up we tagged along with The Thursdays – Gareth Pearson and Michael Tymbios – ahead of April’s First Thursdays.
Last Friday, Unathi Mkonto presented Volume 2 of his ongoing series of drawings, Boys of South Africa, in an open studio setup at Special Occasion in Cape Town. We were there to document his selection process, the many trips up and down ladders transforming the space, the installation of the works, and the opening night. Together Unathi’s works form a study in line drawing using the game of cricket as a loose starting point. The exhibition text explains further, “Unathi finds a playful energy in the game of cricket, whilst transposing its 70s South African political past. In this way he places the game and its turf in a dance with its historical and cultural context in the country.” Unathi was born in Peddie in the Eastern Cape. His Boys of South Africa series also represents a return to this birthplace and is representative of the fond childhood memories he has associated with the game.
Besides art-making, Unathi has worked as an architect after completing his studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He went on to work in the fashion industry and still produces his own experimental collections. In addition to his own creative endeavours, Unathi works as an assistant and costume designer at artist Athi-Patra Ruga’s studio, and will travel with the studio to the upcoming Venice Biennale.
To capture these photos we used the Lumia Camera and the Adobe Photoshop Express app which allows easy photo editing on-the-go. Over and above basic composition tools, the app includes tools to adjust brightness, contrast, exposure, shadows, clarity and vibrance which you can tweak manually. Alternatively, the app also offers over 20 one-touch Instagram-style filters. In-app purchases include the noise reduction pack to minimise unwanted grain in your photos.
Inspired to #makeithappen yourself? Aimed at motivating South Africans to do what they’ve always wanted to and reach their goals, Lumia is collecting pledges and encouraging people to stick to them by giving away 10 Lumia devices and loads of airtime as rewards for making them happen.
