16 Apr Human is Beautiful | RBA’s A/W 2015 Lookbook Makes a Colourful Statement
RBA, or Rebellious Blessed African, is a brand described as ‘progressive’ and ‘inclusive’ by founder Etienne Kankolongo. Besides specialising in street wear accessories like five panel caps, snapbacks, bucket hats and backpacks, it’s important to Etienne that the brand also be focussed on sending powerful messages to young Africans. RBA’s design philosophy is one of fusion, blending African symbols and patterns with fashion-forward fabrics to create finished products that are trendy and youthful. Most of their headgear incorporates fabrics like pleather, suede and light cork, to complement the ethnic cotton prints that form the foundation of all their products.
The latest RBA range is called “Human is Beautiful”, a title based on the brand’s positive outlook. About the thinking behind the range and lookbook, Etienne says that with less positive narratives, we can be overwhelmed by stories or experiences of racism, xenophobia, classism, homophobia and sexism. RBA would like to shed some light on the beauty humans are capable of, regardless of the small voice they may have amidst the dark.
