Local accessory brand Pichulik just released their AW15 collection. With signature bold shapes and rich, warm colours this collection titled Pietra Terra is the result of a collaboration with Italian perfumery Santa Maria Novella. Owner and designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik has always been fascinated with Italy. Earlier this year Vogue Italia named Pichulik as a finalist in their Scouting for Africa Project, soon after she was accepted for an art residency in Florence which she’ll take up over June/July. She also met her hero Rosita Missoni at Design Indaba. Fate? We think so. The collaboration with Santa Maria Novella that followed was a natural fit.
Santa Maria Novella has been making artisanal perfumes in Florence for centuries. Katherine-Mary used their classic fragrances as points of departure for creating her AW15 range. “After an inspiring discussion with Michelle Knapp, who owns Santa Maria Novella in Cape Town, we began exploring their 13th century heritage. As we researched the Renaissance decadence of the architecture and frescoes, a rich royal palette began to emerge,” Katherine-Mary explains. She worked mostly with stones such as jade, serpentine, agate, black lace dream agate and blue dream agate and fittingly called this collection Pietra Terra. The beautiful campaign images shot by Kristin-Lee Moolman reflect the richness of 16th century Italy, Italian design as well as the art deco motifs as expressed in Italian West Africa. Shot on cliffs along Chapman’s Peak looking over the ocean and surrounded by rock and fynbos, these images also express Pichulik’s African roots.
