21 Apr A Dancer Becomes Unbound in Beautiful Performance Video ‘Strain’
White hot sunlight, deep shadows, concrete and a washed-out blue sky set the stage for a dancer slowly becomming unbound in Strain, a performance video starring Sarah Wocknitz. The film is a collaborative output from director/producer duo Michelle Madden and Gabriella Achadinha, who previously worked together on the short documentary Lavendar Hill Better Bodies.
Strain is powerful, beautiful and arresting and while it’s very much open to interpretation, Gabriella says that “it was initially planned with the themes of female sexuality and expression in mind, specifically in the motifs of the rope and being constrained.” At the start Sarah is draped with fabric and tied up, likened in appearance to the static structures behind her. Steadily and as the film progresses she finds freedom of movement and in this, freedom of being.
