It’s May and unofficially winter in Cape Town. But it’s also First Thursdays and the cold isn’t going to scare us off heading into the streets after dark. Not convinced? The line-up below might help. See you there!
Stop 1: Studio Dylan Thomaz | 145 Buitengracht Street
Black on White by Kurt Pio is an exploration of tonal contrasts and variations of scale which explores the gestural movement with an energetic, emphasise on dynamic lines. The main design from this body of work will be made into homeware pieces which will be for sale on the night. See dylanthomaz.com or the Facebook event for more.
Stop 2: Friends of Design | 186 Bree Street
Friends of Design is hosting a 1000 Drawings Doodle Session. Paper, pens, pencils, markers and all other doodle gear will be provided to create A5 doodles, scribbles, graffiti, sketches, watercolour and oil paintings, experimental and conceptual works. Doodling at 5pm

Stop 3: The Eye | 44a Bloem Street
Sentient Salad, an exhibition of new and old drawings, prints and zines by Jean de Wet is opening at The Eye. See the Facebook event for more.
Stop 4: Youngbloods Gallery | 70 – 72 Bree Street
Booom! Baby is a new show opening at Youngbloods which features work from 28 acclaimed South African and international artists in support of a charity which takes care of neglected and abandoned babies. See the Facebook event for more details.
Stop 5: StateoftheART | 61 Shortmarket Street
A selection of paintings by artists and identical twins Alvira and Alouette Ferreira from their body of work (LIFE)LIKE is on show at StateoftheART. They’re also running a one night only competition where you could win an original artwork inspired by the selfies you post using #sotalifelikeselfie. See their Facebook page for more.
Stop 6: SMITH | 56 Church Street
A group show titled Current is showing at SMITH. Artists include Dale Lawrence, Grace Cross, Chloe Reid, Matty Roodt, Christiaan Conradie, Elsabe Milandri, Rosie Mudge, Marsi van de Heuvel, David Brits, Julia Merrett, Jeanne Gaigher, Gabi-Lee Smit, Ronald Muchatuta, Danielle Bischoff, Nic Eppel, Kurt Pio, Ashley Walters and Sepideh Mehraban. Stop 8: 6 Spin Steet Gallery | 6 Spin Street
The BOS Ice Tea Design-A-Can Exhibition is opening at 6 Spin Street Galley tonight. The winner of the competition Ofentse Letebele’s design drew inspiration from the 18th Century Ndebele wall painting style. See the Facebook event for more.
Stop 9: Twenty Fifty | 8 Spin Street
TF-1, the UCT MArch(Prof) 20×20 exhibition and silent auction is opening at Twenty Fifty. This is an annual fundraising exhibition held by the MArch(Prof) students in order to raise money for their June/July research tour. Find Twenty Fifty on Facebook for updates.
