A Guide to First Thursdays Joburg | 7 May 2015

First Thursday Johannesburg

It’s the first First Thursdays in Joburg this Thursday, 7th May. Working off the super successful Cape Town model, this monthly event will see art galleries and other cultural institutions in Braamfontein staying open until late on the first Thursday of every month going forward, offering people an immersive and varied cultural experience in the city. First Thursdays Johannesburg runs from 5-9pm (and later) with the idea being to navigate stops along the route on foot. Printed maps will be available at most of the listed venues, but what you choose to see and in what order is completely up to you. To help get you orientated for this fun new Jozi event, here’s our Guide to First Thursday Johannesburg, which includes 7 stops and takes in some of the new and already running shows.

Stop 1: WAM | Cnr Bertha & Jorissen

If you haven’t seen Penny Siopis’ retrospective, Time and Again yet, now’s the time! (although you might just miss everything else because it’s very easy to get lost in front of her works for hours). Check the WAM Facebook page for more info.

Pop in and see the pop-up exhibition Con.Artist, the outcome of three workshop sessions in the space by ‘non-artists’. More info on the Facebook event page plus look out for our showcase of the exhibition and info about the ‘non’ artists on Friday.

Stop 7: Fourthwall Books | 91 De Korte Street

If you’ve never been to local art book publisher and book shop Fourthwall Books, do yourself a favour and take the detour a few blocks across town to check them out and probably walk away having purchased some printed treat. Read an interview we did with Oliver Barstow recently about photography book design, or take a look at their Facebook page for more info.
