Angus Mackinnon’s Ode to Taxi Drivers and Their Workspace

As a photographer on the Invisible Borders residency project, Angus Mackinnon spent a good six months of 2014 making his way through nineteen West African and European countries by road. Since we shared his photo essay of the virtually abandoned ruins of La Güera he’s updated his site with a few more projects from his travels.

Some Taxi Drivers (a series-in-progress) is an ode to taxi drivers and their workspace, coupled as an act of personal exploration on Angus’ behalf. He says, “By actively engaging and photographing the individuals who make a living as taxi drivers, I hope that they will reveal something about themselves and their environment to me. The engaging mode of making the portraits is an attempt to draw attention to the diversity that exists within the simple act of photographing people.”

The makeshift studio Angus set up to photograph the taxi drivers against is one he made similar use of for his graduate series exploring the phenomenon of Skurreling – also known as waste-picking, trolley pulling or reclaiming. For him, these types of interactions function as “fleeting access points” in his ongoing attempt to better understand the dynamic complexities of the African continent and its people.
