Having designed limited edition merchandise for RVCA, 2Bop, and Unknown Union, Daniel Ting Chong is no stranger to creating fun artworks for brands. He’s done everything from hotdog t-shirts to ombre bucket hats to planet socks and a range of soap shaped like anything but your ordinary white cube. For his latest he’s gone big, literally. In case you haven’t heard, Nike Sandton’s recent makeover split their men’s and women’s stores to launch the first Nike women’s only shop on the African continent. Daniel created cheerful and energetic illustrations which were translated into two massive glass murals at the new Nike stores.
It was Daniel’s task to create illustrations as spirited and inspiring as the spaces they now occupy. Both stores offer a wide range of Nike gear, plus special services, weekly classes and motivational events – all focussed on encouraging an active lifestyle. Capturing this in his work, Daniel made two dynamic illustrations which echo the well-known Nike slogan. The illustrations were printed onto tissue paper too, which is being used for packaging (and then carefully decreased and framed, we imagine). Daniel also developed the concept for a ceiling sculpture; a giant Nike Free Run 3.0 sole that kicks out of the store’s wall.
If you’re in Johannesburg, visit the Nike women’s and men’s stores in Sandton City Mall. They’re open from Monday to Saturday from 9am – 8pm and Sundays from 9am – 6pm.
