The KLûK CGDT SS16 Collection exhibition launch at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Cape Town did two things; firstly, it showcased the luxurious couture that is synonymous with the design house and secondly, it sparked discussion over the necessity of traditional fashion shows. Instead of trying to absorb as much as possible before the next model walked past, 400 guests admired the collection which was conceptualised like a fine art opening alongside fashion photography at the CAAM Gallery in De Waterkant. “It made sense to play with the idea of art and create an exhibition that would last longer that a catwalk show”, says the design house.

The #KluKCGDTTartisan collaboration with Levi’s comissioned the work of nine photographers and videographer Roice Nel, who documented the project in a series of fashion films. This season, they presented three limited edition prints from each photographer and exhibited them alongside KLûK CGDT’s installations.

With 31 looks, the SS16 Collection has a strong Asian influence and blends the flowing feel of loose oriental garments with figure shaping styles reminiscent of the 1950s.  Added to this was a 10 piece range to complement Levi’s denim, which coincided with the global launch of the brand’s new women’s collection. KLûK CGDT has always had a denim love affair and saw this as an ideal opportunity to reimagine a timeless wardrobe staple. The incorporated Levi’s designs are from their original Red and Black Tab ranges but were reimagined using painting, bleaching and deconstructing techniques.

When describing the photography brief, the design house said, “We wanted [the photographers] to be creative without any commerical restraint. Call it our Andy Warhol/Factory moment”. The prints are on display till August 8 and of those sold 20% of the profits will go to the Sunflower Fund.
