04 Sep A Guide to Art Week Joburg
Joburg Art Week starts tomorrow, and with it a jam-packed programme of events, including exhibitions, talks, walkabouts and parties. Organised around areas, the programme kicks off in Soweto, before moving through Alexandra, New Doornfontein, Rosebank, the JAG, the FNB JoburgArtFair, Braamfontein, Newtown and finally Maboneng. In total there are over 50 events taking place in and around Joburg, with shuttles connecting the various locations. Here are some highlights from the programme.
Saturday 5 September: Soweto
Okestrai Sghubu: That’i Kover Okestra presents Hannah C. Jones
Old and new members of the evolving Thath’i Cover Okestra will collaborate with London-based artist, composer, conductor and PhD Art candidate at Goldsmiths College Hannah C. Jones to examine Kwaito’s enduring term “Sghubu/Xigubu”.

Sunday 6th September: Alexandrea
The A MAZE. Pop up in Alexandra is a one day event, which is inspiring to the youth/ young adults in place. With short talks, hands-on activities like the game development production line simulator and an eye-opening exhibition of african and international independent videogames we will introduce the art of game design, alternative game play and give some insights into game development and the local game community in South Africa. This project is funded by the City of Johannesburg.

Monday 7th September: New Doornfontein
Unresolved | A solo exhibition of photographic works by Mbali Mdluli
Existential | A solo exhibition of photographic works by Mack Magagane
ROOM presents two solo exhibitions by the lens based media artists Mack Magagane and Mbali Mdluli. Although distinctly different in their aesthetic approach the exhibition presents explorations and meditations by each of the artists on the contact they occupy in relation to space and time, both physical and metaphysical.

Calculated Chaos | Exhibition and Open Studios
This group exhibition by the Superstroke and Superblur Art Movements explores the idea of Calculated Chaos as proposed by Butler Shaffer in his 1985 book with the same title, as well as the origins of art and how it can be combined with art in a modern setting. Some clarity of Vision by Kimathi Donkor
Kimathi Donkor is a British contemporary artist of Ghanaian, Jewish and Jamaican family heritage whose work has been exhibited in Europe, Africa and the Americas. For his first solo show in South Africa, Donkor has produced new paintings inspired by his two-month residency in Johannesburg with Gallery MOMO.

Friday 11th September: Sandton
The FNB JoburgArtFair provides an annual event for the coming together of artists, curators and collectors for the conceptual visioning of contemporary African art. Now in its 8th year, the Fair features over 50 exhibitors from seven countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The annual festival residency takes on three convergent fields; namely hardware, software and the digital arts. Residents will be occupying the basement gallery of Wits Art Museum, turning it into an Open Lab in which they will engage the public, produce work, run workshops and install their final visions and work.
