27 Oct Behance Portfolio Review Night: Meet The Group Leaders
It’s that exciting time of year, where creatives across the world present their work to be reviewed by industry professionals as part of the global Behance Review week. The Makers Co. are hosting a Portfolio Review Night in Cape Town this Thursday, where participants will be split into small groups and their portfolios examined, critiqued and given feedback by a group leader – who’s an industry expert. The event is bi-annual and earlier this year saw architecture student Thabang Rabothata win top portfolio prize for his AW/15 lookbook. We’re thrilled to be a sponsor and with only two days to go, can’t wait to view all the participant’s work. In the meantime here’s the lowdown on the group leaders:
Dylan Howe Jones:
Dylan is a freelance illustrator whose clients include Men’s Health USA, Telkom Magazine and DSTV. He’s inspired by reading books on topics including marketing, design, art and economics and has a thirst for industry-related knowledge. His neat illustration style is characterized by strong geometric elements and bold colour palettes. View his portfolio on Behance or visit his website.
Rohan Etesbeth: Rohan, along with Jan Solms, is the co-founder of Fanakalo – a design studio based in Stellenbosch. Fanakalo is a very descriptive pidgin language that was developed in the mines of South Africa and some African countries where people with different cultures and languages needed to communicate with each other. Based in a wine-making area, they’ve developed a steller reputation for wine label design but their first love has always been design that utilizes illustration.
Their team consists of designers Hugh Fletcher Cox, Janneke de Kock and studio manager, Dinah Dick. Recently they designed the cover of South Africa’s Design Times ‘Packing Issue’ and have done work for Ramfest, Oppikoppi, Steenberg and Helderberg Winjmaerij & Khulu Soap. For more of their work visit their Behance or website.
Medford is the creative director of Gloo, South Africa’s most awarded strategic and creative marketing agency. They help clients find innovative strategies to connect with audiences in relevant ways and at the same time examine how the digital landscape can enhance business structures through the way they service customers and operate within internal networks.
The disciplines of User Interface and User Experience are most influential to Medford’s design process where he feels inspired by the challenge and process of creation. As creative director he’s responsible for finding digital solutions within media campaigns and most recent projects include 360º Video, Holograms and Pseudo 3D animations. Find out more on their website.
Philip van Niekerk:
Philip has a BA in documentary photography and works at WetINK’s Cape Town branch, where he’s tasked with developing the business and curating work for their fine art gallery. WetINK offers fine art printing, custom book creation, film scanning and business print services. Philip’s expertise includes printing and digital workflow. Click here to find out more about WetINK.
Stephen is co-director at the Makers Company, who focus on illustration, design, motion graphics and iconography. Collectively they’ve collaborated with an array of worldwide brands, magazines and agencies such as Time, British Airways and Coca-Cola. As a designer, Stephen is a “Strong believer in the power of community, traditional craftsmanship and the human aspect within design”. To find view more work, visit their site or Behance.
