A collaboration between an underground music platform and a clothing label sounds a little unusual at first, until you find out why they teamed up. RAW Sessions – the joint endeavour of Boiler Room and G-Star RAW – has taken over the globe, unearthing and revealing tomorrow’s creators, today, through an ongoing series of events and short films. The recent RAW Sessions held in Johannesburg featured influential artists like DJ Lag, the Boyzn Bucks collective, neo-soul artist Nonku Phiri and DJ Themba Lunacy.
This edition of RAW Sessions highlighted the phenomenon of “gqom”, a genre born in Durban that has taken over the music scene. To shed some light on this, Boiler Room and G-Star RAW enlisted the Visual Content Gang to capture the growing gqom scene in a short documentary-style film starring Okmalumkoolkat, DJ Lag and Rudeboyz.
