10 Feb A Q&A with Meëk Meëk (in words and pictures)
In their time off from studying film and television at Wits, sisters Claire and Abby Meekel create totally delightful (and straight up weird) illustrations and animations under the moniker of Meëk Meëk. Having recently become acquainted with their work, we decided to quiz the duo with a light-hearted Q&A, which they’ve answered in kind through a series of cheerful drawings.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up each morning?
The first thing we do when we get out of bed is roll out our yoga mat, meditate and stretch for 30 minutes.
What does it look like inside your mind?
How do you get your creative juices flowing?
Going outside into nature helps our creativity, as we try to find shapes, forms and ideas all around us.
Do you have any quirks or habits that you just can’t shake?
We have a tendency to be quite repetitive when we do certain things. For example, when we create a tune on the piano or overuse a word that sounds interesting. We improvise a lot when being creative or dealing with a situation. We are also slightly pareidolic which helps with our drawings and animations.
What’s your favourite thing to do in the city?
On a Thursday night, the best thing to do after a busy day is to go for a drink, listen to great music and meet up with friends at a bar called Kitcheners.
What sort of music do you listen to?
Anything from old school hip hop, jazz, classical, electro, punk, and French music, just to name a few.
What’s your signature dish?
Toasted cheese and tomato.
What’s your most-loved possession or item of clothing?
Our Polo caps.
Where do you see yourselves in 10 year’s time?
