27 Jul Premiere: Lindiwe the Ghost’s new video is a poignant performance against homophobia
Two characters move about an abandoned warehouse – fluid and wraith-like as they kick up dust and dance intimately, painfully and passionately with one another. This sets the tone for Cape Town-based Lindiwe the Ghost’s cinematic music video for their single ‘Ghost in a Blood Machine’.
Directed by Georgina Warner (of Jas Boude fame) the performance anchored video serves as a poignant visual representation of the issues surrounding internalised homophobia as well as the implications of being in love with someone who is ashamed of you. The piece is performed and choreographed by Chester Martinez, who is currently dancing with FKA Twigs on her world tour. He dances the piece with Devon Marshbank, a local ballet artist who recently performed the lead in Romeo’s Kiss. Together, the two dance out a beautifully antagonistic performance, perfectly complementing the track.
The track too is a brilliant piece of work. Bold and resolute vocals open on an unadorned note, led in by burgeoning synths and later lifted to operatic heights through a pulsating bassline. The chorus brings a particularly powerful tone to the track and serves as a stand-alone moment of lyricism.
“I’m just a ghost in a blood machine // a dirty idea, but my heart is clean // I know you hate it that you love me, but baby will you hold me // baby will you hold me if they can’t see?”
“The song’s chorus stands as a kind of self-audit; a declaration of realness and humanness – a way to defy that automatic, conditioned shame-response you experience whenever you’re categorised as sick or abnormal because of who you are and who you love,” says the duo. “We believe the song has the potential to contribute positively to the current narrative surrounding the queer experience. Homophobia is insidious, destructive and violent, and when you face it from someone you love, it can hollow you out and compromise your very sense of self.”
If you don’t know them yet, Lindiwe the Ghost is an alt-pop band from Cape Town comprising Evan Strauss and Shannon Devy. The duo are set to release their debut EP Mother this August so be sure to keep up to date with them on Bandcamp and Facebook.
