02 Sep How the Nando’s Chicken Run is helping artists make it full-time
What happens when a team of art patrons hop in a car and drive from townships to suburbs, studios to home setups, visiting artists at work as they go along? A strong cultivation of art coming out of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Zimbabwe of course! The Nando’s Chicken Run initiative is spearheaded by Yellowwoods Art in partnership with Nando’s and aims to make a meaningful difference to artist’s lives and careers.
The Nando’s Chicken Run is an innovative artist-career development programme that sources high-quality African art for Nando’s restaurants around the world, and is structured to enable artists in the programme to focus full-time on their artistic careers, knowing that they will be able to earn a decent and regular living from their work.
A key purpose of this 2016 Loeries Gold and Grand Prix-winning initiative is to scout out remarkable contemporary African artworks for Nando’s growing art collection, and to critique the work of artists, enabling discussions that build skills and confidence and provides artists with a regular income.
When the Yellowwoods Art team recognise artworks they believe would be assets in the Nando’s collection, they offer to buy them directly from the artist. If a deal is done, artists are paid in full on the very same day. So next time you’re enjoying a meal at Nando’s, take a moment to enjoy the authentic, local art around you. It’s straight out of the studios of Africa’s new wave of contemporary artists.
