11 Oct Daisie Jo brings a playful style to the streets of Johannesburg
In a Between 10and5 exclusive fashion piece, we spotlight up-and-coming fashion designer Daisie Jo. Daisie was a finalist in last year’s Elle New Talent competition and now spends her days helping to create high fashion art pieces at pre-eminent local fashion label Marianne Fassler. Daisie, myself and hair stylist and make up artist Orli Oh Meiri collaborated to create a fun series of photographs to showcase the young creative’s intricately made garments in all of their whimsical glory.
Inspiration-wise, we turned our attention to the streets of Johannesburg, capturing muse Anita Jansen at Boss Model Management in a sumptuous mix of gingham, chiffon, chunky knits, artful embroidery and original floral prints against urban back drops. Daisie Jo’s constructions are influenced by things that she personally identifies with, “I like to bring in a part of my heritage. My Ouma was a very big part of my life. Her flower gardens and embroidery still inspire me everyday. She used to sew, embroider and knit, and I have made it quite a big part of my range.” For beauty Orli went with a striking mod make up look that was heavy on the eyes and pale on the lips.
When it comes to Daisie’s approach to design, she opts to not religiously follow trends. “When someone feels beautiful, you can see it in the way they carry themselves. I feel that’s all that matters. Honesty over perfection.”
